8 Virtual Interview Tips to Help You Land The Job

Source: Colorjoy Stock

Job interviews have always been nerve-wracking, but virtual interviews feel like a different challenge altogether. You’re worried about technical glitches, it’s tougher to make small talk and develop good rapport, or you may struggle to pick up on nonverbal cues. It’s no wonder that a 2017 study found that eight in 10 job seekers said video interviews are just as stressful or even more stressful than in-person interviews (and that was before they became the norm).

Virtual interviews certainly aren’t without their challenges and hiccups. Fortunately, we’re here to help. We connected with a few human resource professionals to get their best virtual interview tips that will help you ace that interview—and get one step closer to landing the job.

1. Remember that all of the traditional interview advice still applies

Virtual interviews are a different format, but the nuts and bolts are still largely the same. That’s why nearly all of the experts mentioned that the typical interview best practices should still be a high priority.

From researching the company and thoroughly reading the job description to practicing your answers to common questions and sending a “thank you” note, remember to start with the basics. From the get-go, approach it just as you would an in-person interview.

2. Read the instructions carefully

It can feel like every single company uses something different for their virtual interviews. Some use Zoom, others use Google Meet—you get the idea.

That’s why Jade Hugh, senior talent advisor at Bloom, recommended that you review the interview instructions carefully so you know exactly where you need to be, if there’s certain software you need to have installed, and if there’s a password or something else required.

3. Check your technology

Technology hurdles can sidetrack your interview (not to mention cause you a lot of added stress), so it’s wise to double-check all of your equipment before signing on for the interview.

Is your camera working? What about your microphone? Can you access the interview platform? Is your Wi-Fi connection stable?

“This gives you the chance to contact the interviewer early, just in case you notice an issue,” said Kimone Napier, HR Strategist.

4. Find a quiet, distraction-free space

Doing your interview from your kitchen table while your toddler tosses things out of your cupboards or your roommate makes an omelet isn’t ideal. Instead, find a quiet space where you can focus on the conversation.

If there’s no such thing as a quiet spot in your home (hey, we get it), Napier said an application like Krisp can help you cancel out unwanted background noise.

When it comes to distractions, environmental ones aren’t the only ones you need to be aware of. You should eliminate your self-imposed ones too. “Close your other windows and browsers,” said Agnes Tseng, People and Culture advisor at Bloom. “We can tell when you’re getting distracted by something else.”

Hunt echoed that sentiment and also warned interviewees to turn off their phones. That will avoid any pings or buzzes that rip your attention away from the conversation.

“Close your other windows and browsers. We can tell when you’re getting distracted by something else.”

5. Up your production value

You’re not producing a feature film, but that doesn’t mean you want your visual aesthetic to be completely haphazard.

For starters, be mindful of what your interviewer will see in your background (yep, it’s time to move those piles of laundry). Tempted to use one of those video features to blur your background? A smarter strategy is to use that space to your advantage.

“A huge part of any interview is getting to know you in and outside of work, so give them a sneak peek into who you are,” said Suzi Archer, head of People and Talent at MyCleverGroup. “This is a great opportunity to create talking points by having your favorite books on display, any certificates or achievements you’d like to highlight, your favorite music, or family photos.”

Decent lighting is another important thing you need to consider. “Illuminate your face as much as you possibly can so that your interviewer is able to see your facial expressions,” Tseng said.

6. Dress for success

Even if you’re meeting virtually, dressing in a way that’s polished and professional can help you out. Yep, this applies to your bottom half too—commit to the full outfit instead of a blazer on top and pajama pants on the bottom.

Why? Not only does it send the message that you’re taking the interview seriously, but it can also impact your mood and even performance.

Don’t believe us? One study gave intellectual tests to two groups: one wearing casual clothing and one wearing formal clothing. The formal group actually performed better on the tests and tasks. So, take the time to polish yourself up before that chat—it could make a surprisingly big difference in the quality of your interview.

7. Remember eye contact

The lack of nonverbal cues is one of the biggest hangups about virtual interviews, but the good news is that eye contact is something that you can replicate on video calls.

“It can be quite distracting seeing yourself on screen, but do your best to make eye contact with the person asking the questions and mind your body language,” Archer. said One helpful tip is to put googly eyes right by your webcam. It might look a little silly, but it’ll give you something to focus on (other than your own reflection).

8. Be authentic

Nerves run high in an interview, and it’s tempting to feel like you need to be flawless in order to land the job, but that’s not the case. You’re far better off being honest and authentic.

Archer said that starts with setting expectations upfront. “It’s now expected that people working and interviewing from home will likely be balancing a variety of home distractions,” she explained, mentioning the now-viral BBC interview featuring a rogue toddler. “I have a 5-month-old baby, and I’m often on the other side of the interview screen. I’ll always start by saying, ‘I’m not expecting any disruptions, but I do have a baby at home, so please bear with me if she causes any interruptions.’”

If something does happen during your interview? Instead of letting panic wash over you, just be honest about what’s happening. “Have a new puppy? Did the doorbell ring? Be open and have a good laugh about it. At the end of the day, we are all human and understand the nuances of working from home,” Hugh said.

Not being able to do an interview in person comes with some challenges, but it’s not all bad news. “Virtual interviews do have their benefits,” Archer said. “You’re on your turf, you don’t have to worry about how much travel time you need to allow, where to park, and how to navigate the office once you arrive.”

“In my opinion, the pros of virtual interviews outweigh the cons,” Napier added, noting that other benefits include saving time and reducing bias.

So, rather than wishing your interview was being handled differently, focus on making the most of the opportunity in front of you. If nothing else, it’s a chance to prove that you’re an adaptable candidate who can excel regardless of what the world throws your way.

The Drugstore Beauty Products French Girls Swear By

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Source: @aveneusa

You already know, love, and envy French girl style, but what you may not know is that their beauty routines are equally as enviable. And thanks to the French pharmacie, they’re also affordable. American drugstores certainly offer their fair share of dupes that rival high-end makeup products and skincare, but French pharmacies are a treasure trove of affordable beauty products that keep French women’s skin glowy and their hair flawless, all without spending too much money or taking too much time. There’s no need to scour makeup counters or aisles of beauty stores if you don’t want to (but if you do, you do you)—the French pharmacie is a one-stop-shop for the best affordable products the beauty world has to offer.

Scroll on to shop them from the comfort of your home instead of booking a ticket to Paris (actually, we’ll take both, s’il vous plaît). A French girl walks into a drugstore, and here’s what she buys.

Eau Thermale Avène

Tinted Sunscreen

Avène is a longtime French-girl favorite for their skincare and SPF needs, but this tinted sunscreen formula might take the cake (or croissant). It’s made with 100 percent mineral UVA and UVB filters (instead of chemical) and uses powerful antioxidants for extra protection against the sun’s harmful rays, blue light, and pollution. Bonus: The slight tint blends into your skin tone for light coverage that will make you glow without having to put on foundation (a French girl’s dream!).

Shop it now

La Roche-Posay

Thermal Spring Water Face Spray

Thermal spring water is a staple in French girls’ routines but is something the rest of us often look past. Think of it as a fancy water to soothe irritation, hydrate skin, and totally refresh it whenever you need it throughout your day. This one is also rich in selenium, which is a powerful antioxidant used to boost glow and protect the skin.

Shop it now

Eau Thermale Avène

Retrinal Intensive Cream

Retinol is a must-have for the skincare obsessed, and the French are no exception. This one contains peptides that physically fill in wrinkles and tone the skin as well as vitamin E to help protect against pollution and harmful rays. Basically, if you only want one product to apply at night, let this be it.

Shop it now

NUXE

Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil

It’s no surprise the French don’t like to try too hard or make too much of a fuss when it comes to their beauty routines. So, naturally, this multi-purpose dry oil has a cult following as the one product you can use for everything. Try it on dry strands to improve hair shine and reduce split ends, massage it in as a body oil to moisturize after your shower, or pat it on your face as the last step in your routine for added glow.

Shop it now

Klorane

Smoothing and Relaxing Patches

Because even French women drink too much wine or have a bad night’s sleep, these eye patches are their go-to for those days when dark circles are taking over. Instead of applying a heavy layer of concealer, focus on skincare with these soothing, nourishing, and brightening eye patches that will help reduce puffiness.

Shop it now

Embryolisse

Lait Crème Concentré

While we stan a nourishing face cream or oil to deeply nourish the skin, sometimes we just need something that feels more lightweight and refreshing than heavy and creamy. Enter: this milky moisturizer. It’s anti-aging, insanely hydrating, and flawlessly blends into the skin without feeling like another layer. The French even use it as a makeup primer and a sleeping mask (especially on flights!).

Shop it now

Bioderma

Micellar Water

As the product that started a revolution, micellar water has taken the beauty world by storm, and you can thank the French for that. This one cleanses the skin while it hydrates and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Klorane

Shampoo with Quinine and B Vitamins

Walk through any French pharmacie or beauty store, and you’ll see Klorane covering the walls (for good reason). It’s the go-to haircare brand because of the superfood ingredients, incredible scents, and powerful results. This one helps thicken and strengthen hair, but check out their wide range of products to find the best one for your hair goals.

Homeoplasmine

Magic Cream

You know how your mom carried around Vaseline everywhere for chapped lips, dry skin, or irritation? This is basically that but way better. Many French women don’t leave the house without this (appropriately named) Magic Cream. Dab it over lipstick for a moisturized finish, apply it to dry areas like elbows and hands, or rub it into skin to help with irritation like rosacea.

Shop it now

Marvis

Whitening Mint Toothpaste

I don’t know if you consider toothpaste to be a beauty product, but a French woman knows that good dental hygiene is a crucial part of her beauty routine. Plus, how pretty would this one look on your bathroom counter instead of the basic brand you have now?

Shop it now

Avène

High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50

A mineral face sunscreen in the form of a tinted compact? Yep, sign me up. This little compact is shockingly an SPF, not a foundation or concealer. It contains skin-nourishing vitamin E for potent antioxidant protection and thermal spring water to soften the skin. It comes in two shades that blend well—the tint makes it wearable for all skin tones (so you won’t have to worry about that white cast from other sunscreens). Your SPF has never looked prettier.

Shop it now

La Roche-Posay

Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen

Ever since I first tried this facial sunscreen in Paris, I’ve been hooked. Not only does it protect against sun damage like a normal SPF, but it also absorbs pore-clogging oil to prevent breakouts (can your SPF do that?). As if that didn’t sell me already, it also has a matte finish, which means no more greasy sunscreen face.

Shop it now

Avène

Lipid-Replenishing Balm

Do you get sensitive, itchy, or dry skin (especially in the winter?). Guess what: so do French women. Their secret fix is this balm, which uses the latest skincare technology to alleviate redness, irritation, and dryness on the deepest level. Bonus: It contains that signature thermal spring water for additional soothing and hydrating.

Shop it now

Klorane

Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

Before we were putting oat milk in our lattes, the French were putting oat milk in their dry shampoos. French women do effortless beauty better than anybody, and dry shampoo is a staple in achieving effortless beauty. I love this one because, unlike most dry shampoos, it’s nourishing and soothing (thanks to the oat milk!).

5 Things to Talk About Before Getting Engaged

Source: @kaylaseah

For many of us, being engaged means putting most (if not all) of our attention on wedding planning. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the fairytale aspect of wedding planning, making it easy to forget that besides planning a party, you are merging your life with your partner.

As a San Francisco-based psychotherapist, I specialize in supporting individuals and couples in manifesting the life they envision. Clients often wonder what the magic formula is for a successful relationship and more times than not, my answer is communication and your relationship with yourself.  Whether single or coupled, consider these important conversations to create a solid foundation with your significant other.

Meet the expert
Jodee Virgo
LICENSED PSYCHOTHERAPIST
Jodee is a licensed psychotherapist in San Francisco, focusing on individuals, couples, and families.

1. Finances

Many of us find it hard to discuss finances with a significant other. It can bring up feelings of shame, embarrassment, and comparative judgment. When talking about finances with your significant other, it is important to be gentle and move slowly. I have worked with numerous couples in therapy that describe frequent arguing, violated expectations, and profound disappointment in one another and in the relationship, often in part because of financial issues. I believe the most important thing that can be done for one another is to stay away from blame.

It is OK to have a different “money personality” from your partner, and if there is something specific that you worry about in regards to finances, better to bring it up sooner than later. Curious about your partner’s credit score? Interested in joint accounts? Prenup? Do discuss—in-depth. Harboring your feelings will only lead to resentment.

It’s important to first get clear on your own feelings and priorities about money before sharing what you expect from your partner. I encourage couples to set time aside each month to have a money meeting. This may seem like overkill to some, but consider this; issues with money contribute to divorce more than any other topic—sex, children, and division of labor.

Here are some important questions to get you started:

  • How much debt do you have?
  • Do you have a 401k?
  • What is the max one of us can spend without having to consult the other?
  • At what age would you like to retire? What are our retirement goals?
  • What happens if we want children but cannot conceive? How much are we willing to spend on fertility treatments or adoption?
  • Would you financially help family if they needed it? How much would you be willing to give?
  • Do we have equal say on how we use our money as a couple (i.e., buying a house, investments, childcare, etc.), no matter who earns more?

2. Children

We have all heard the obvious questions. Do you want children someday? If so, how many? But what about all of the other stuff that comes along with having children? Baby names and nursery decor are fun, but there’s so much more territory to traverse besides picking the perfect appellation.

We all have our own narrative about what kind of life we want to provide for our future babies and sometimes it is hard to remember that there is another adult who has an equal say in how this whole parenting thing will play out. Raising a child with another person is perhaps one of the most fun and challenging adventures a couple will have together. Where couples can get into trouble is when they don’t discuss the fundamental aspects of co-parenting.

Here are some important factors to consider:

  • How will you afford the new addition to your family?
  • How will you handle it if one of you is not able to conceive?
  • Are you open to adoption? IVF? Surrogacy?
  • What are the expectations about who will be the primary care giver for your children?
  • Will they be raised under one religion?
  • What do you imagine your discipline style will be?
  • Public or private school?
  • Never forget that before baby, your partner was your one and only. How will the two of you maintain a loving connection?

3. How to Fight

Disagreements happen and are a normal process of being in a relationship. You’ll argue about what to have for dinner or which movie to watch, and you’ll even have some bigger fights about hurt feelings, paying the bills, and having a family. It’s how you argue or work through disagreements that can determine the long-term success of your relationship. Disagreements and, yes, even fights, don’t actually have to be emotionally distressing or negative. In fact, the happiest relationships don’t avoid or fear disagreements; they use them to become closer and understand each other better.

As cliche as it sounds, you’re now a partnership which means you’re on the same team. You both should think about every argument in terms of how to fix it and work through it together, rather than how to win it. If you made the decision to spend your life with someone, odds are your relationship is more important than who is right and who is wrong. Before you get married (but any time throughout your relationship), work together on the way you’re communicating. If your arguments still escalate too far or you’re both saying things you don’t mean, consider seeking a therapist who can help you work through disagreements and practice communication.

Consider using these phrases during an argument:

  • “I’m feeling a little stressed, would you help me pick up the house today?” instead of “You never help with chores.”
  • I’m sorry you feel hurt” or “My intention was never to upset you,” to acknowledge your partner’s feelings (even if you disagree).
  • Ask “How do you feel about our relationship today?” and “What more can I do to make this relationship even better?” often to encourage frequent communication
  • Instead of waiting for your turn to talk, ask questions like, “Explain to me more why this action made you feel that way?” or “Can you tell me what your perspective was?” which will also make your partner feel valued and heard.
  • If you feel like a fight is getting too heated, say “Can we revisit this in the morning?” or offer to do something relaxing together so you can both reset your perspective.

4. Career

Confucius said, “Choose a job that you love and never work a day in your life.” Well, that’s dandy, but what about when the job you love requires you to travel, stay at work late, and generally eats up a lot of your time? Or rather, what if your partner’s job requires this? OR, what if this doesn’t apply to you at all and you are in a job you dislike or even despise? It is important for you and your partner to share your feelings about your respected jobs/careers and how you envision moving forward. Again, you can only know so much in advance, but it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of what you and your partner expect from one another.

Consider the following questions:

  • Would you relocate to a new city/state for a job? Or for your partner’s job?
  • What are your feelings if you are the sole breadwinner in the relationship?
  • How will you support one another if one of you gets laid off, or wants to change careers? Or go back to graduate school?
  • How do you feel right now about the time commitments given to your careers? How will this look if you decide to have children?
  • How will the division of labor in the home be divided if both of your work? Or only one of you? Who is expected to do what? (This question is a biggie, ladies.)

5. Sex and Intimacy

Sex is omnipresent in our culture. We are bombarded with messages from so many mediums that prompt us to think about, talk about, and seek out sex. You’d think we’d all be relaxed, open, and comfortable talking about it, but in my experience the opposite is actually true. Have you ever noticed it feels easier to talk about sex with your friends rather than your partner? We know how to have this conversation outside of our relationship but when it comes to exploring this topic with our lover we feel anxious, vulnerable, and unclear. I know it may feel scary. But feel the fear and talk about your sex life anyway! As sexual communication skills improve, so will the quality of your relationship.

I want to emphasize how beneficial it is to understand your own body and how to use it. In other words, master your territory so you have a basic idea of what you like and don’t like. Next, I encourage couples to establish safety with each other around this topic before diving in. This often starts with a conversation about fear. Talking about what you are afraid of and why helps you and your partner cultivate trust and empathy. Chances are you are both afraid of the same thing…rejection. Truth be told, most people want to be able to explore their sexuality with their partners and sometimes just don’t know how.

Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

  • Start this conversation outside of the bedroom and work your way in. Things are less tense, fragile, and vulnerable outside of the bedroom so don’t bring this conversation up for the first time when you’re getting busy.
  • Tell your partner what you need to feel safe and vice versa.
  • Respect differences in sexual preferences. You do not need to agree to do any particular activity, and it is so so so important to be open and not pass judgment on your partner’s preferences. This will lead to feeling angry and ashamed and will likely shut your partner and this entire conversation down. Shame is the worst.
  • Listen without interrupting.
  • Watch an erotic film together (only if both of you feel comfortable enough to do so).
  • Practice makes perfect. During and after practice, offer positive feedback (super important!), compliments, and love.
  • Keep talking about how to keep your sex life fresh and fun. When things feel stale, get creative! For one couple this may mean sex toys and role-playing while for another it may mean having an open marriage. This is your life and you and your partner get to design it to keep you happy and fulfilled!

Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eye Shadows are Cute as Hell In and Out of the Pan

Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eyeshadow Trio in Chocolate Dahlia Review

$21 at Amazon

TL;DR:

  • What it is: A stack of three eye shadows with lovely color payoff and longevity
  • What it does: Lets you create subtle looks for daytime and glamorous ones for … anytime
  • Who it’s for: Eyeshadow novices and pros alike

Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eyeshadow Trio is a favorite of Allure staffers (it won a Best of Beauty award), myself included. It’s more than the packaging. I love the cute little stacks that open and close with a satisfying snap, but the shadows themselves are also really good. Whether you grab a fluffy brush to apply or just use your fingers, you get a lovely color payoff and, most importantly, a shadow look that lasts.

Give me any one of these Bento sets and I’m content, but lately, I’ve been quite partial to Chocolate Dahlia, a trio of shadows in neutral chocolatey hues. Each Bento set has a light, medium, and dark color and this particular one includes a shimmery, rosy beige, a medium-hued matte taupe, and a richer matte dark brown.

This set is a crowd pleaser. It can work on a number of skin tones, plus its neutral hues can help you create an eye shadow look that goes with pretty much anything. I mean, you can’t go wrong with beiges and browns, especially ones this pretty.

I tested this out with a simple two-shadow look. I’ve been something of a shadow minimalist during this pandemic. I still like to wear it, but the multi-step process I used to do has gone out the window. I’m quite content with a matte crease color and something nice and sparkly on my lids.

I started by dipping a blending brush into the darkest shade, and then buffing it into my crease. I’ve got a medium-brown complexion, so I thought that the deep chocolate shade would be best to add some definition to my eyes. The middle, lighter shade, I think would work on my lids if I was doing an all-matte look with these shadows. But, because I like to sparkle, I dipped my finger into the top champagne hue, swiped it over my lid, then grabbed my blending brush again to blur any harsh lines.

Guys, it was the easiest eye shadow look ever and I got so many compliments on it. Seriously — I had a haircut appointment right after putting this on, and the girls in the shop were living! And after several hours of wear there wasn’t a single crease in sight.

You'll find Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eyeshadow Trio in the October 2021 Allure Beauty Box.

Kim Kardashian Tattooed Her Face With Her Daughter and Niece

kim kardashian posing at an E eventGetty Images

Kim Kardashian seems to be the latest celebrity parent that is taking a more hands-on approach to their kids' beauty needs. Unlike Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who became his daughter's go-to manicurist earlier this week, Kim joined in on all the beauty fun rather than just providing the beauty services.

Along with her daughter North and her niece Penelope, Kim decided to adorn her face with some tattoos. She posted some photos showing off their new tats to her Instagram grid on Wednesday, September 29. Based on the photos, it looks like North decided to go all out on her face and neck. Illustrations of beaming sunshines, a smiley face, and a diamond — to name a few — occupy nearly every inch of her face. Meanwhile, Kim went with a more toned-down look, adding visions of hearts and flowers to only her cheeks. In Kim's second photo, we see that Penelope took the simplest approach to tattooing her face, showing that she embellished her under eyes with an anchor, a star, and a scripted phrase.

Instagram content

View on Instagram

While North is holding up what appears to be a sticker sheet — confirming these are temporary, in case you were concerned — Kim didn't tag a brand, so we're not sure where to get the exact same look. But with the popularity of temporary tattoos on the rise, there are plenty of places to scoop up similarly cute designs. (We're partial to Tattly for the brand's frequent collaborations with some of our favorite real-life tattoo artists.)

Many of us also probably wore temporary tattoos like North's and Penelope's as kids (given that they were the only viable option at the time). And for those of us fully-formed adults looking for something a little more permanent (but not the most permanent), there are even tattoo studios that offer body art made with ink that slowly fades over the course of a year. Kim, we think that should be your next step.

20 Tops That Are Perfect for Zoom Meetings

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Source: Everlane

It used to be the Skype interview joke: business on top, pajamas on bottom. But in 2021? Well, picking video-ready tops is an everyday reality.

If you’re someone who has a lot of video meetings, you’re probably stuck in the rut of needing to look professional while also doing a meeting from your couch. Needing to dress in anything other than an oversized sweatshirt can feel like a struggle right now, but the beauty of video conferences is that you only need to look good up top—hypothetically, nobody would know if you had nothing on bottom at all.

We’ve rounded up some spring-inspired tops that you can throw on in the morning for anything from a meeting with your big boss to an after-work virtual happy hour with coworkers. Happy Zooming!

The Trader Joe’s Coffee You Should Try—and the Ones You Should Skip

While some people look forward to their weekly trip to the grocery store, I’ve always absolutely dreaded it—that is, until I fell in love with Trader Joe’s. From the cauliflower gnocchi that I lean on as a meal multiple times a week to the cookie butter that’s my ultimate treat, I’ve dabbled in just about every one of their exclusive products. But I realized recently that I hadn’t even begun to dip my toe into Trader Joe’s coffee—which felt like a sin to me as a coffee lover.

To no one’s surprise, Trader Joe’s coffee section is pretty extensive, and from refrigerated, single-serve lattes to tons of instant coffee options, it was hard to know where to start. So I set out to accomplish the ultimate feat: trying every TJ’s coffee product I could get my hands on, so you don’t have to.

After weeks of testing and my blood pumping with caffeine, my opinions are set and I’m ready to let the world know which are worth trying, and which you should pass on. All of the coffees are ranked out of five cups, with five being the best and one being the worst.

Ready to take fewer walks to your nearest Starbucks? Here’s my ultimate guide to all of Trader Joe’s coffee.

1. Organic Cold Brew (single-serving bottle)

Rating: ☕☕☕☕

I feel that of all the coffees, I am the strongest critic of cold brews. Some veer really bitter and acidic and make me feel truly ill, but when I find one that I like, I really like it.

These little single-serving bottles are a nice treat to keep in the fridge for when you’re having one of those mornings and a regular coffee just won’t cut it. This cold brew was smooth and strong and positively lovely.

2. Coconut Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate

Rating: ☕☕☕

I love the idea of a coffee concentrate (you only have to use a little and then dilute it with water or milk), and this one was good without being too sweet or coconut-y. I put a splash of milk in it and it tasted like a regular coffee with a little coconut milk in it. It wasn’t my favorite, but if you like coconut, you’ll really like this.

3. Instant Cold Brew

Rating: ☕☕☕

To be honest, no instant coffee is that amazing, but of all the ones I’ve tried, this one is my favorite. I’m not entirely sure what makes this instant cold brew instead of just instant coffee, but I’ve kept one of these in my apartment for the past year and find myself reaching for it quite a bit. I wouldn’t say it tastes exactly like real coffee, but I love that I can have a decent iced coffee in a pinch—no cooling required.

4. Cold Brew (multi-serving jug)

Rating: ☕☕

Of all of the cold brews I tried from TJ’s, this was my least favorite, but that honestly might have just been based on personal preference. Like the label says, this stuff is bold, and it was a little too much for me. If you like your coffee extra strong, you’ll really enjoy this one.

5. La Colombe Oatmilk Draft Latte (single-serving can)

Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

This is obviously not Trader Joe’s brand, but they carry it at Trader Joe’s and therefore got a spot on this list. There’s a La Colombe close to our Chicago office, and their oatmilk draft latte has always been the coffee I go and get as a true treat; it is one of the best coffees I’ve ever had in my life and nothing compares. The canned version is honestly very, very similar, and if I had it my way I’d have a fridge stocked full of these and would drink one every single morning.

6. Organic French Roast Cold Brew Concentrate (multi-serving jug)

Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

This was by far and large my absolute favorite find from this entire excursion. It’s another concentrate, so I did a third of this, a third water, and a third oat milk, and it was a $6 coffee experience that veered me away from Starbucks for an entire week. I ran out of this and literally stopped the next day to buy two more to keep in the fridge. It is smooth and slightly sweet and doesn’t taste too acidic, and this will be a forever staple in my fridge. I cannot sing its praises enough.

7. Organic French Roast

Rating: ☕☕☕☕

I’m new to the French Press life (my parents got one for me this past Christmas), and I’ve been on the hunt to find a new coffee that I really like using in it. Alas, this was it. This is an amazing ground coffee option to keep on-hand in your kitchen, and is super affordable and comes in a can, which to me is far superior to the ones that come in a bag and require other storage from me.

8. Cold Brew Coconut Cream Latte (single-serving can)

Rating: ☕

I don’t ever mind my coffee being on the sweeter side, but this stuff was sweet. It could not be heavier on the coconut milk and I did not enjoy it at all, even as a sweet lover. It was so creamy that it almost tasted thick, which was a bizarre experience I don’t care to have again.

9. 100% Colombian Instant Coffee

Rating: ☕☕☕☕

Again, instant coffee isn’t exactly a luxury, but more a necessity and a good thing to have on hand as a backup; however, on an instant-coffee scale, this was actually really good. I made it hot, and I could see myself drinking this in the fall and winter when I’m craving hot coffees rather than cold ones. If you put this in a blind test, I don’t necessarily think I’d know it was an instant coffee, and that means it’s a winner.

10. Ristretto Espresso Capsules (Nespresso-compatible pods)

In an utter fool’s move, I bought these not realizing they were for a Nespresso, a machine I don’t own. Therefore I will not be ranking them, but thought they were noteworthy due to the fact that I associate Nespresso pods with being something you need to order online, these are pretty affordable, and you can pick them up at Trader Joe’s.

11. Instant Coffee Packets with Cream and Sugar

Rating: ☕☕☕

OK, these are not great, but I still respect the hell out of them as something you can use on a road trip or trip in general when the only other option is a gas station coffee. It’s a one-and-done situation that is sometimes simply necessary, and while I wouldn’t use them when I have my kitchen available, I’m going to stick them in my glove box, and that earns major points.

12. French Vanilla Cold Brew (single-serving can)

Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

My coffee flavor of choice is always vanilla, so I was extremely excited about this, and it lived up to my expectations. Besides the La Colombe (which to be fair is kind of cheating since it isn’t Trader Joe’s), this was my favorite canned/bottled coffee I found. It’s sweet enough without being too sweet, and if you put it in a glass with some ice, you can honestly trick yourself into thinking it’s a latte you got at Starbucks.

13. Medium Roast Coffee Cups (Keurig-compatible pods)

Rating: ☕☕☕☕

I have a Keurig and am a lover of it, but the right pods are absolutely essential. I am extraordinarily picky with them, and really only stick to a couple of go-tos, but these passed my test. They’re an absolutely lovely classic, medium-roast coffee that tastes like a brewed cup, not like it came from a Keurig, which is obviously exactly what you want.
